Amenbo 24.0.0 — a pane carries a name, and panes can be reordered

A pane now carries a name, and panes can be dragged into order. The changes from 22.4.0, 22.5.0 and 23.0.0 also landed by this version.

The row above a pane says what the pane is called

A pane used to be named after the first line typed into it. The first line is not always the errand, so an hour later there was no telling what the pane had been opened for. The row now carries the name and nothing else: you can set it yourself, or the AI running in the pane can name itself. Everything else that used to sit on that row is gathered in one panel under it.

Panes are dragged into order

Pick up an open pane and move it, and the open panes take the order you dragged for. While a pane is in hand, the card says what that pane is holding, so there is no doubt which one is moving.

An image can be pasted into a pane

Paste an image from the clipboard and it is written down as a file, with where it went put into the pane. Pasting where there is no pane to keep it still says where the file was written.

Each project is drawn at the split it was left at

Switch to another project and come back, and the panes are laid out the way that project was left. The left column now has the same two widths the terminal tabs have, and the tabs fold away into the window’s edge. Project tabs are dragged out to the width their names want.

What is being held is named before it is closed

Closing the app asks first while terminals are running, and names what is being held rather than offering to write it down. The restart that applies an update asks the same way, because it takes every pane. Closing a single pane asks the one same question, whatever that pane holds.

Getting it

Open the installer for your OS from the latest release. No admin rights are needed.

• macOS — .pkg, one for Apple silicon and one for Intel (GUI and CLI come together)
• Windows — setup .exe (GUI and CLI come together)
• Linux — the GUI is an AppImage; the amenbo command comes from the CLI installer

To update: on the GUI, the “a newer version is available” banner applies it in place. If you installed only the CLI, amenbo update --apply swaps it.

The stored data format moves up — the first launch on this version migrates it, and a backup from before the migration is kept automatically. Once migrated, an earlier version can no longer open it. The GUI and the CLI are updated together by the same installer, so do not leave one of them on the old version.
